The ARCA RE/MAX Series makes its 16th all-time appearance at Kentucky Speedway and opens a speedway season for the eighth time.  Erik Darnell won the 2007 series May event in the No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford currently driven by Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.  The series also will return July 18 for the “Kentucky 150” and will be paired with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

JESSE SMITH (No. 30 Lloyd’s Barbeque-Spam-Hormel-Jones Group Dodge):
“The first time I’ve run on the track was this morning, so I’ve got about 20, 25 laps in, just getting used to the track. I felt like the car was really good, it was a little tight in the center so we’ll make some adjustments and get better on that. We should be good for the race and qualifying. We have two top fives this season. This week, we’ll feel like we’ll be good and hopefully run up front and get a win. We’ll try to get a pole here. We’ll be better than what we practiced, so I feel like we have a good shot at it.”

MICHAEL ANNETT (No. 28 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota):
“We started out today on race trim just trying to figure out where we’re going to be for tonight. The car really good, it’s going to be really good on long runs. We’ll probably free it up even more for the night time conditions. We did our mock (qualifying run) and it was even better. We’re looking forward to qualifying, but I know we have a good car for the race as well. I’ve run about 20 laps here, I came out and did a test with Frank Kimmel one time. I’ve got a few laps here, but I’m still trying to figure out the track myself. We’ll definitely go for the pole and hope for a top three or top five.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

SCOTT SPEED (No. 2 Red Bull Toyota – Ranks eighth in series point standings):
“We’ll definitely have a shot for the pole. Our car will be pretty good. We had a little trouble when we put on our first set (of tires).  Normally, I don’t like to change things too much and I’m happy with the car throughout the race. The car is normally right before we start. With it going into night, it’s the first night race for ARCA (this season), I expect the balance to change a little bit, but I think we’ll be alright.“

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Seventeen trucks turned practice laps and ended the session incident free at 1:45 p.m.

The top five drivers from the practice session were:
7   PAUL HAHN        60.893 mph (14.780 seconds)
31 NICK GULATTA    60.480 mph (14.881 seconds)
21 NORM WEAVER   60.217 mph (14.946 seconds)
39 ROB JONES        60.128 mph (14.968 seconds)

2008 Kentucky Speedway

PAUL HAHN (No. 7 Hahn’s Powder Coating-Fox Auto Parts-Howe Chevrolet):
“The track is definitely challenging. This is the only track we run where I think the banking is inverted. It’s a fun track, it’s a lot of beatin’ and bangin’. The facility is great. We’ve run good here, too, which makes it worthwhile to come here. We did a few things different than we did with the truck last year, so hopefully it’ll pay off. We hope to start somewhere up front and bring home another checkered (flag). Basically, we’re a lot better on asphalt than we did on dirt. We had some bad luck in Winchester (with a  12th-place finish). Hopefully we can turn it around here and get back in the points chase.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

ARCA RE/MAX Series pole qualifying began as scheduled at 3:30 p.m. Tom Hessert III was out on the track in the No. 1 Maaco Auto Painting – Boudreaux’s Butt Paste Ford. Weather conditions had not changed from ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series qualifying.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

NORM WEAVER obtained the pole award for today’s ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series “Kentucky 100” by virtue of the series inversion rule. Weaver turned his top qualifying lap at 60.354-mph (14.912 seconds).  He will start tonight’s race ranked 11th in the series standings and a full 100 points behind the leader Steve Christman, who qualified fifth for this afternoon’s short track tangle.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

NICK GULLATTA was the actual fastest qualifier. He turned the top lap of the session at 60.955 mph (14.765 seconds). “I think we had to make some changes after practice to get a little quicker to have a good race truck. The guys worked on it and I think we’ll have a good race truck for 100 (laps).  It’s much better than inverting one to 10 or one to 12. We invert off the dice roll, so I’ll take four. We’ll see what we’ve got.  Usually, the track gets a little looser here. It’s pretty flat and it’s going to heat most of the afternoon, so if anything it’ll get a little tighter toward the end. By then, it’ll be all sorted out. Probably after 75 laps or so there will be six or so trucks on the lead lap and it’ll all be sorted out.“

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Rookie Sean Cuisse will start his first ARCA RE/MAX Series race from the pole position after tearing off a top 178.365-mph (30.275 seconds) and will hold the top spot in the 41-car “Drive Smart! Buckle-Up Kentucky 150” field when drivers take the green flag at 8:00 p.m. Cuisse closed out the series practice session sixth on the grid after turning his fastest lap at 177.107 mph (30.490 seconds).

CAISSE:
“I’ve never seen this place, but I watched a couple videos of past NASCAR Nationwide and Craftsman Truck Series races here. I’ve never been on a mile-and-a-half except earlier this week when we went to Rockingham to shake this car down. Basically, it’s a brand new car. Germaine (Racing) went through it, put their special stuff in it and I was comfortable with the car right away.

“I knew we had a car that could sit on the pole. That’s a bonus, but I’m more concerned to that we have a good car in race trim. I’m focused on winning this race. It’s only 100 laps, 150-miles, so it should go quick. Hopefully, people respect each other.  I haven’t raced with any of these guys so I have to learn who I can race with and who I can’t. I have to earn the respect of the veterans and the other rookies in this race because I’m not running for points,” Cuisse said.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Robb Brent (No. 00 Orchard Chrysler Dodge Jeep Chevrolet), third in practice, qualified third with a 177.591 mph (30.407 seconds) lap.

BRENT:
“We had a good set-up because we brought the same car we had in Kansas where we ran so good (fifth). We really didn’t do much to it today in practice. The tracks are pretty similar, that’s why we were faster out of the box. The car was pretty good to go out and qualify the way it was. We almost ran as fast as those guys in race trim. We have a great racecar and should be able to race to the front and be back where we belong,” Brent said.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Jesse Smith (No. 30 Lloyd’s Barbeque Spam Hormel Jones Group Dodge), quickest in practice with a 178.731-mph (30.213 seconds) lap that matched the standing series qualifying record set last July by Erin Crocker, will start third after posting a 177.200-mph (30.474 seconds) lap.

SMITH:
“We’re not too disappointed with it (the run); it gives us a good starting position for tonight’s race. We should be able to go out there, be up front and hopefully lead when it counts on the last lap. We can’t change too much. We’ll make it a little bit looser because we were tight there, but we feel like the car is pretty good. It wasn’t the best there for one lap, but we feel like it’ll be good 10 laps into the race,” Smith said.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Michael Annett (No. 28 Pilot Travel Centers Toyota) qualified fourth 177.136-mph (30.485 seconds) lap. Annett was second in the today’s practice session with a fast 177.819-mph (30.368 second) lap. Ryan Fischer (No. 25 TufTruckdirect.com Chevrolet) rounded out the top five qualifiers with a 177.003-mph (30.508 seconds) lap.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Nine-time and defending series champion Frank Kimmel qualified 11th with a 174.610-mph (30.926 seconds) lap in his No. 44 Ford Drive One Ford. He will start tonight’s race ranked second in the series standings and 35 points behind leader Matt Carter, who qualified 16th with a 173.745-mph (31.080 seconds) lap in the No. 46 Stine Seed Ft. Dodge Animal Health Pork Ford. Kimmel will make a bid to become the second five-time race winner in Kentucky Speedway history.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Paul Hahn (No. 7 Hahn’s Powder Coating-Fox Auto Parts-Howe Racing Chevrolet) took his second consecutive ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series on the Kentucky Speedway paved-quarter-mile track this afternoon. Hahn beat out Rob Jones (No. 39 R&B Contractors Chevrolet) to take the 100-lap event title.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Hahn qualified second and started third after the inversion. He took the lead for the first time on Lap 60 when he made an inside pass on Jones in the backstretch. Hahn was briefly limited by lapped traffic from Lap 78 to Lap 88, but successfully guided his truck through to the win.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Series standings leader Steve Christman (No. 19 Bagman Racing Chassis – R&B Fabrications Chevrolet) finished third, Nick Gullatta (No. 31 Thomson Automotive – Mr. Heater – Enerco Chevrolet) placed fourth,   and Norm Weaver (No. 21 Dan Cava Toyota-Safety Clean-Lifeguard Medical Toyota) completed the top five.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Weaver snapped a gear shift in his hand in between Turn 3 and 4 on Lap 2
WEAVER:
“It just came off into my hands. I held it, got it back in to gear and screwed that thing back on as tight as I could during the first caution. To be on the pole and have this happen is frustrating, but I really hate it for these guys (team). It was a racer’s race and a lot of fun out there.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

HAHN ON HIS PASS FOR THE LEAD:
“We both went into Turn 1 and he started sliding up. I’m like, ‘okay, here I go’ and all the sudden I started sliding up, too. I was able to get on the binders a little harder, aim the truck down, get on the gas a little sooner and get underneath him. After I got by him, I knew if I kept the same line I was running he wasn’t going to get by me.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

HAHN ON THE RACE AND HIS TRUCK BATTERY DYING IN VICTORY LANE:
This track, you have to really bide your time because it’s so easy for a lapped truck to push up into you. I’d rather pass them on the inside, but they’re told that if they’re a lap down, they stay down. I think we had a battery going down toward the end. I had to kick the fan off because I had a little miss in the truck and I could tell toward the end I just didn’t have all the power I needed to get by the No. 23. At the end, I was fortunate the battery died when it did, after the checkered flag.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

HAHN ON HIS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON:
“We needed to definitely turn it around after Winchester. We were running good at Winchester, third with 13 laps to go and we had an engine failure. That put us behind the eight ball a little bit in the chase for the points. But, after today, we got points for leading, winning and qualifying second. I think it put us right back up in the chase and hopefully we can make a strong bid for our second championship.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

JONES:
“We used that truck up. The front right tire and brakes couldn’t go anymore and we couldn’t hang with them. It was a good solid run and we’re looking forward to Toldeo next weekend. We’ve had a third, today we got a second, we just need one more spot.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

Forty-one drivers rolled off the starting grid at 8:01 p.m., in preparation for tonight’s “Drive Smart! Buckle-Up Kentucky 150.” The race is the season-opener for the ninth Kentucky Speedway season and 16th all-time appearance for the series at Kentucky Speedway. The temperature is 64 degrees.

2008 Kentucky Speedway

99 STENHOUSE, JR., (Winner):
On the victory:
"This is a special win compared to the sprint cars I've won in, and means the most to me to finally get a win in a stock car. I can't say enough about this Ford Fusion and the Roush 8 Engines--they really ran down the straightaways tonight.  The guys got the car prepared for me, and we were pretty much perfect at the end, running our fastest laps.  They did an awesome job in the pits.  We gained five or six spots on our one stop (Lap 38), so I have to thank all of them, and my dad, and Carl (Edwards), Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth."

"I just can't say enough about the engine programs here (with Roush).  Qualifying didn't go as good as we wanted it to, but I think that was more me than the car.  That's something I have to work on.  I'm just glad we got this one, and hopefully there are more to come."

"There's a lot of competition here, and a lot of good cars in the ARCA/ReMAX Series, but it's getting better and better for us every week.  It was a another good night for points for us, and we're just going to try to keep the momentum up going to Toledo."

On the restarts at the end of the race:
"It was pretty tough.  I've never really led a restart in one of these stock cars, and actually those last few restarts when we were behind him (#2 Scott Speed) were the best restarts I've ever had in a stock car.  I'm just trying to get better ever week, and learn as much as I can."

No. 2 Scott Speed (Second):
“Fuel strategy was fine. The only problem was on like the original green-white-checker. We got off to a nice little lead, but we broke third gear. So, the rest of the restarts they kept doing the green-white-checker and the gear was destroyed. It was a challenge. We definitely had a fast car.  We should have won.”

No. 22 Ken Butler (Third):
“The Aaron’s Dream Machine ran well.  We restarted in eighth and hung back as people wrecked or ran out of gas in front of me.  I just tried to stay out of the way.  The car was better on the longer runs.  If we would have had a few more of those, we would have finished better.”

No. 25 Ryan Fisher (Fourth):
“We started off free and fell back.  We fought back though and it was a really good night.  We were running on fumes on the last lap.  I think we went 80-something laps on fuel.  Overall, it was a great night for us.”

2008 Kentucky Speedway

No. 09 John Wes Townley (Fifth):
It’s a great night for us.  I knew we had a great car early today at practice.  It started out tight during qualifying and managed to save eighth.  I was really happy with our points.  We’ve had a great start to our year.  We haven’t had any real damage to the car.  We have managed to bring the cars home clean.  Now we need to work on getting even better finishes.
